Amaziah Davis

Amaziah Davis is primarily a TROMBONE PLAYER and also BASS GUITARIST. He is a singer, and helicon-ist (Eastern European version of a sousaphone which is an American version of a tuba…er…almost [see photos]), whose musical influences range from Puccini to P-Funk and Bob Marley to Musicals.

“I started my musical career at the relatively late age of 22 playing bass in a dodgy blues band. After quickly ditching careers in the police force, fire brigade and as a kiss-o-gram, truck driver, dustbin man and nightclub doorman (to name just a few…), my interest in playing music full time grew when I moved to Brighton and studied Jazz at Chichester College. It was during this course in 1994 that I took up playing trombone and performed my first gig on the instrument after only six weeks. Having successfully completed that course I moved North and studied at the City of Leeds College of Music where I learned to dislike jazz but still gained a BA(hons) in Jazz studies. Whilst in Leeds I was introduced to P-Funk, the music of George Clinton and the 70’s super heavy US funk band Parliament which has become one of the greatest influences in the music that I write."

Amaziah is also an actor on the side too and has performed, (in a very low key manner), in Jesus Christ Superstar (Caiaphas), Hair (Hud), Blues In The Night (The Man) to name a few musicals with a couple of feature films and sitcoms in there somewhere as well.

Amaziah is available for session work, dep work, one-of gigs, short tours or ongoing commitments.

Also available as a solo trombone with or without (funerals etc) professional reggae backing tracks or with a reggae DJ - performed through a discreet but powerful quality pa system. Perfect for corporate presentation, weddings and parties.

Other trusted musicians can be arranged where a ready-made ensemble is required.

Current Project

Ska TreK

...To boldly go where no band has gone before.

This band’s unique brand of entertainment fuses original wave, 1960's Ska with well known film and tv music as well melodies that are embedded in the human consciousness. Tunes such as The Star Trek Theme, (obviously), The Magnificent Seven, Dr Who, The Final Countdown, Sussex By The Sea and The Dambusters, Simmer Down – and that’s just the first album. The tunes have already been selected to receive the ska treatment and be ska-ified for subsequent albums ‘Tribble-ations’, ‘Praxis’ and ‘Pon Farr’, (Star Trek fans will recognize the names).

The band consists of a collection of fun loving ska aficionados who are at the top of their musical game and who know each other from numerous bands and musical projects in and around Brighton. They were chosen to be a part of this project because they are all consummate professionals.

The Lost & Found Orchestra

From the creators of STOMP

AFTER THE GLOBAL SUCCESS of their unique take on rhythm and physical theatre, Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas have taken the STOMP concept to a new level: where STOMP creates rhythm with everyday objects, The Lost and Found Orchestra transforms everyday objects into a plethora of invented instruments. LFO recreates every section of a symphony orchestra, using musical saws, bottles, whirly toys and traffic cones. Out of chaos is formed an orchestra...

Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas were approached by the Brighton Festival commissioning a new work for their 40th anniversary. In only 6 months, instruments had to be invented and reinvented from scratch, and an entire score composed. With the help of a crew made up of experienced STOMP personnel, and expert instrument designer Paul Marshall advising, and with UK musicians who were prepared to abandon their instruments and learn how to play saws and hosepipes, LFO premiered in May 2006.

Since then LFO has broken box office records at Sydney Opera House and played extended runs at London's Royal Festival Hall, Amsterdam's Carre theatre and the Casino de Paris.

The show was reworked for 2012's return visits to Amsterdam and Brighton with a dazzling array of homemade instruments, a mix of veteran STOMP performers, classical musicians, physical comedians and aerialists, LFO's performance climaxes with the human voice being added to the mix: what begins with simple melodies plucked, blown, thumped and brushed into life, ends in a complex symphonic and choral celebration...

Fanfara

Helicon player

Fanfara were a brass and percussion group of up to 12 musicians playing Eastern European music.

They played together after two of the group visited Zece Prajini, Romania, home of their friend and teacher Calin ‘Sulo’ Constantin, of Fanfara Ciocarlia, in 2003 and 2005.

As a group they studied with Naat Veliov and the original Kocani Orkestar, musicians from the Boban i Marco Markovic Orkestar and three of them visited Belgrade and Vladicin Han to study with brass players.

Fanfara regularly featured Merlin Shepherd, who specialises in Eastern European Jewish instrumental folk music.
